Good Friday morning to you!

Memorial Day has become part of a three-day weekend that many Americans cherish as the unofficial beginning of summer by firing up the grill, sharing time with friends and family, and cracking open a few cold beverages — and I do much of the same. But I also worry that many of us have forgotten the meaning of this important holiday.

My father was a veteran of the Korean War and experienced the battlefield. He lost comrades and friends in this war, and, as such, Memorial Day affected him in ways most of us can’t understand. As a child, I joined Dad in viewing the Memorial Day parade and service each year to honor those who had fallen. It was a dutiful yet humbling experience for both of us, and it brought a tear to Dad’s eyes each year.

Years later, I took my young children to Memorial Day services at a cemetery near our home. My kids didn't understand why we were there or why it brought a tear to my eyes, too, but they respectfully joined me and listened while I did my best to explain. An elderly woman walked up to me in one of those early years and thanked me for bringing my children and helping to teach them the importance of Memorial Day. That one comment motivated me to continue to attend these services and to honor those who gave their lives for us. I hope that my comments here may do the same for you.

Thanks for reading.

The hang up is Windsor Heights construction on University. Juneteenth remains vague as it was at the end of the Civil War. — Jim Duncan, The Food Dude

State confirms first case of West Nile

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) today announced the first case of West Nile virus infection reported in 2021, an older adult (aged 61 years to 80 years) from Montgomery County. The case was confirmed through a test at the State Hygienic Lab.

“Humans get infected with West Nile virus through a mosquito bite and being outside means there's a risk for West Nile virus infection. But we have easily accessible preventive tools like insect repellent, that can help keep Iowans safe from mosquito bites, which lowers the risk of West Nile infection" said IDPH Medical Director & State Epidemiologist Dr. Caitlin Pedati.

Meet Sharon Jensen
: Practicing what she “teaches”

By Becky Kolosik

Educators who engage in lifelong learning set an example for their students because they practice what they teach.

Simpson Professor of Education Sharon Jensen says it was her undergraduate advisor at Simpson College who first fueled her desire to become a lifelong learner.

“I was also fortunate to have passionate grad school professors who helped continue that enthusiasm.”

Jensen grew up on a farm near a small town of 300 people in southwest central Iowa — just an hour and 15 minutes west on Highway 92.
While it may sound cliché, Jensen knew from the time she was a third grader that she wanted to follow in her mom’s footsteps and become a teacher.

And she has her third-grade teacher to thank, too.
