Good Friday morning to you!

Ever think about retirement? Or do you ever NOT think about retirement? You are in one of those two camps, for sure.

Retirement used to seem so far away. And although I don’t plan to settle in for episodes of “The Price is Right” anytime soon, I certainly do recognize that those days are coming. Seriously, just a few years ago, retirement age seemed so far away. The kids were in school. We were refinancing our house. I even bought a motorcycle. What happened?

As I rolled (literally) into my fifties, the reminders of my aging started to hit. I bought reading glasses. Invested in larger belts. Tried out a pair of hearing aids (a story for another day). And what’s left of my hair is turning gray. Whatever happened to subtle hints?

I recently read a quote from “The Peter Principle” author Laurence J. Peter that defined retirement as “the time when you never do all the things you intended to do when you’d have the time.” Ouch.

My stepfather looked forward to retirement more than anyone I have known. He had big plans for all the things he was going to do. He died at age 63.

These are not-so-subtle hints to pursue your dreams now, as none of us know when our final day will be. And, if we are fortunate enough to live a long life, we may not be able to seek out all that we intended to do. So, regardless of your age, start pursuing those dreams in your available time now. “The Price is Right” will have to wait.

Have a fabulous Friday, and thanks for reading.

FROM WHO-TV 13: Plans for DMPS community stadium delayed due to high construction costs

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines Public Schools hopes to build a $19 million field of dreams for the metro’s high school football and soccer teams, but the plans will remain as a blueprint for at least a year longer than expected. The school board and superintendent voted on Tuesday to reject all of the construction bids for the stadium because they were all at least $1.3 million over budget. The field, which would be next to Drake University’s Knapp Center, is now not slated to open until at least the fall of 2023.  READ MORE FROM WHO-TV

Meet Kara Paulson: Overseeing remote learning

By TK West

Born and raised in Cedar Falls, Kara Paulson knew that she would one day become an educator. Paulson studied elementary education, special education and Spanish while attending Central College. During that time, she also played on the softball team that won a National Championship in 2003. Then, after 13 years teaching at various elementary levels, Paulson decided to go back school, obtaining a masters degree in Educational Leadership from Drake University.

“I immersed myself in activities and clubs that allowed me to connect with people and help give voice to all those around me. I knew early on that becoming an educator would allow me to empower others through teaching them how to empower themselves,” Paulson says.

During the rainy weather awhile back, this little guy, hardly bigger than the key fobs we use to get in the office, was hunkered down beside the door latch. Co-workers said I had to get a photo. So, I did. — Photo by Tammy Pearson
