Good Thursday morning to you!

There are two types of people. Those who talk and those who do. Beware of those who talk.

That was sage advice I was given years ago, and, for the most part, I have found it to be true.

Put another way, do you ever notice that people who seem to have all the answers rarely do? They are quick to respond to most any question with a litany of in-depth replies, much which have seemingly nothing to do with your original question. They leave you walking away with wrinkled eyebrows, more puzzled than you were when you asked the question.

Have you also noticed that these “talkers” have a tendency to quickly and repeatedly nod at you when they are replying, as if they are using some type of Jedi mind trick to get you to agree with them?

On the other hand, I have found that some of the smartest people I know do not hesitate to answer questions with, “I don’t know, but you might want to try…”? That’s honest. And humble. And, most importantly, helpful.

The bottom line is that it is OK to not have all the answers. In fact, as many therapists know, sometimes it’s OK to not have any answers but to simply listen. Those of you who are parents of adult children understand this (or, like me, are learning to understand it).

Most of us think, whether we admit it or not, that the most beautiful sound in the world is our own voice, and the bulk of the time we spend “listening” is actually waiting for the right time to interject with our own comments. Sigh.

So which one are you? The talker? Or the doer?

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Meet Anne Sloan: Teaches wellness as a way of life

By Jackie Wilson

Gym classes in the past often consisted of running the dreaded mile run. But, for Anne Sloan’s P.E. class at North Polk High School, one class is all about breathing and relaxing.
Anne teaches yoga and mindfulness to her high school students. She uses a variety of props, such as blocks, wraps and bands, while practicing different poses. The class is meant to provide coping methods and life-long skills.

“We focus on asana. Not only the poses, but the yoga lifestyle of stress management tools and breathing. It’s about being more mindful and learning ways to better manage stress,” she says.

Anne is passionate about staying healthy and active. In college, she pondered a career in athletic training but enjoyed the coaching aspect so became a P.E. teacher 14 years ago. She joined North Polk four years ago.

She’s ramped up her health talks and offered discussions due to the pandemic health crisis.
