Good Thursday morning to you!

When was the last time you took a test? Not some silly trivia quiz, but a performance exam with results that would be attached to you for life?

Does even the thought of taking these types of tests give you anxiety? Excessive sweating? Nausea? Vomiting? Diarrhea? Stomach pain? Rapid heartbeat? Shortness of breath? Headaches? Lightheadedness? You are not alone.

According to an article posted at healthline.com, text anxiety can affect between 10 to 40 percent of all students. But the stress doesn’t go away when the diplomas are handed out, as anxiety disorders affect about 18 percent of adults, too.

Test anxiety is a type of performance anxiety, the article states, affecting everyone from kindergarteners to PhD candidates. But fear not. The website suggests the following ways to cope:

1. Prepare as much as possible. (Thank you, Mr. Obvious.)
2. Learn the best study methods that work for you. (More pressure? Seriously?)
3. When possible, take practice tests beforehand. (Yes, or get a copy of the actual test.)
4. Get plenty of sleep the night before. (Agreed. Always.)
5. The morning of, eat a healthy breakfast that has some protein to keep you going. (Now we’re talking my language.)

A number of different factors can cause test anxiety, according to the article, including a generalized anxiety disorder, a fear of failure and a history of poor test taking. Or, as in my case, all three.

Whew. Got all that down? Good, because there will be a test on all this tomorrow.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Meet Molly Reed: Enjoys the fun nature of her students

By Ashley Rullestad

Molly Reed has spent the last two years teaching kindergarten at Dallas Center Grimes. Next year, she will move to second grade at North Ridge Elementary.

“I will miss my kinders, but am so excited for a new opportunity,” she says. “There is something truly special and rewarding about working with elementary students. The love, joy, enthusiasm and zest for life they bring with them each day to school is something that just can't be beat. When I see a student have a 'light bulb' moment, the feeling is unlike any other. I love that I learn just as much, if not more, from my students than they do from me. Even on my toughest days, I can't imagine doing anything else.”

“I recently purchased a new camera and, of course, you want to find something to photograph. My wife said NO. So I found our cat Sophie who tolerated a few snapshots until she did a 180 and showed me her south side. I got the hint.” — Photo by Paul Houston
