A family legacy: The members of the Patava family build firefighting careers.

Tom and Tim Patava, brothers and natives of Norwalk, along with Joe Patava, Tom’s son, have long-time careers with the Des Moines Fire Department. The three were recognized with an article in the Municipal Fire & Police Retirement System of Iowa’s annual report.
Tim was the first to join the Des Moines Fire Department in 1987.
“A friend’s dad was a firefighter, and I visited the old Fire Station 1 where he worked,” Tim told the Municipal Fire & Police Retirement System of Iowa. “He told me what it was all about and what a good group of people he worked with. It inspired me to join the department right out of high school.”
