Good Friday morning to you!

Masked or unmasked? Which are you? Early on in the coronavirus pandemic, I didn’t know a single person who wanted to wear one of these face coverings. Today, I am not so sure. I was truly looking forward to an official mask-burning party sometime this year, but I now wonder if wearing a mask will be a habit for some that is continued far into the future, if not forever. As much as the effectiveness of masks in stopping the spread of COVID-19 is debated, one can’t help but appreciate the decrease in cold and flu symptoms this season. I am intrigued by the stance of our governor, Kim Reynolds, on lifting the mask mandate. And I am equally intrigued by the stance of Des Moines’ mayor, Frank Cownie, on keeping it in place. Brian Duffy summed it up quite well in his cartoon in the March issue of CITYVIEW with these two leaders in a professional wrestling match. To be honest, I am not sure what to believe, but my hope is that we soon will no longer have a reason to wear a mask and debate this. But for now, like many of you, I will continue to wear one in public places.

Have a fantastic Friday, and, as always, thanks for reading.

Eagle Scout project reels in fishing shed

Evan Baker has been working diligently over the past year to attain his Eagle Scout rank, the highest rank one can achieve within the Boy Scouts of America. He started working on his Eagle Scout project in November of 2019 at Wesley Woods Camp and Retreat just north of Indianola.
“I started working on the project over the summer in 2020, and it was put together near the end of the summer,” he says. “We built a fishing shed and the concrete pad underneath it to hold all of their fishing equipment. They had an old, falling apart shed there that had been there about 15 to 20 years and was just sitting in the dirt. It looked pretty bad.”

The Basilica of St. John Catholic Church in Des Moines.
Construction of the church was completed in September of 1926 at a cost of $480,000. It is in the style of the Northern Italian, or Lombardy Romanesque, and resembles Saint Paul’s Basilica outside the Walls of Rome. The barrel vaulted coffered ceiling covered in gold leaf rises 50 feet above the floor. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. — Photo by Paul Houston
