Good Thursday morning to you!

Happy birthday! Most all of us enjoy hearing this cheerful greeting from our friends, family and others on the anniversary day of our birth. It makes us smile, feel good and celebrate the moment. It’s also fun to say happy birthday to others and watch them smile, feel good and celebrate the moment. With that in mind, we decided to help with the process. If you read yesterday’s Daily Umbrella (and, of course, you did), then you know that a birthday feature is being added to this newsletter each day. We are starting with celebrity birthdays to prime the pump, and then we will be adding birthdays of area residents, too. So send us your birthday, or your kids’, or your mother’s, or your neighbor’s, or your co-workers’. Send them all, and we will publish them here. Just email the full name and birthday (we won’t publish the year) to tammy@iowalivingmagazines.com. And while you are at it, encourage them to sign up to receive the Daily Umbrella each day as well by clicking on the JOIN OUR EMAIL BLAST in the upper right corner of www.dmcityview.com.

Have a great Thursday, and, as always, thanks for reading.

She lives in Winterset and has been married to John for 25 years. They have three kids. Grace is 21, Lillian is 18 and Charlie is 15. This is her first full time job since shortly after being married. Her family has 3 cats, 3 dogs. (That makes 2 Cyclones, 1 Beaver, 1 Ram; 7 cats, 9 dogs "Under the Umbrella")

DES MOINES, Iowa — A bill that the Republicans say would increase penalties for rioters passed another hurdle at the Statehouse on Wednesday night. The controversial measure passed out of the State Senate Judiciary Committee. In the bill, rioters would be charged with a felony if it results in injuries or laser pointing with the intent of assault. There is also language that suggests there would be a disorderly conduct charge for blocking roads. READ MORE FROM KCCI

Personalities

Couple who grew up in former Soviet Union settle in Johnston.

Since 2002, Maria Fedorova and Sergei Svitashev have called Johnston home.
Both Fedorova and Svitashev were born and raised in the former Soviet Union, and as career scientists, they decided to look for job opportunities abroad. Eventually the two found themselves in Minnesota, which is where they met, and moved to Johnston when they both took jobs at Corteva.
As they looked for homes in the area, their number one priority was its proximity to work, as well as a nice neighborhood. At the time, Fedorova and Svitashev were doing discovery research as part of their jobs and frequently going to the lab in the evenings or on the weekends, so they desired a short commute.
