Good Friday morning to you!

Have you been keeping up on the Apple vs. Facebook feud? It may not be the Hatfields vs. the McCoys, but starting this week, iPhone users began receiving messages on their screens asking for explicit permission for companies to follow them. I received a few of those messages, and I promptly selected "no" each time. Facebook’s fear is that many others will do the same as me, which could then heavily impact its ability to track users and target ads to them.
Apple says it wants people to be able to decide for themselves whether or not to participate in this data-reaping process. Facebook says its ads help keep the Internet free for everyone. These two companies have drastically different views about digital, and, according to many sources, their CEOs (Apple’s Tim Cook and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg) truly dislike each other.
So which company is right? That depends, as they both make good points. Apple’s position is that people should have a safe and private digital experience, and that they may have to pay a premium to gain that. Facebook’s view is that the Internet should remain free, and that its targeted advertising makes that happen. Keep watching. This is going to get interesting — and quickly.
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Meet Jeremy Mikesell:
Language arts, Valley volleyball coach

By Jackie Wilson

As Jeremy Mikesell teaches language arts classes at Walnut Creek High School, the content is often the same each year. But Jeremy insists it never gets old.
“We’ve read ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ 20 times. Each time I’ve gotten a new perspective. It gets better doing it over and over, and it’s always refreshing,” he says.
Jeremy has taught language arts for 20 years, the last 10 at Walnut Creek. His grandmother and dad were both teachers. His dad drove 60 miles each day to teach, and Jeremy often visited his classroom.
“     Dad was an auto mechanic instructor. He had a 20-year-old student who was enthralled with learning how to fix a car. I thought, ‘Wow. You can really influence someone with teaching,’ ” he says.
