Good Friday morning to you!

As a freshman in high school, my speech classmates and I were assigned the task of giving a presentation about ourselves. I crafted mine around 10 examples of who I was, starting each segment with, “I am a person who…”
I could see our teacher, Mr. Celoni, out of the corner of my eye, and he was leaning back in his chair, nodding and smiling with his hand on his chin. I ended my speech in a light-hearted way, stating, “I am a person who just finished his first speech of the year!” Mr. Celoni immediately stood up and exclaimed, “I love it… except for the ending. You should have said, ‘But most of all, I am a person!’ ”
It took me years to realize it, but Mr. Celoni was right. He wanted to see what kind of a person each one of us was, and how our pride would — or would not — come through in our presentations.
Too often many of us try to be someone we are not when we should focus on who we are and where we came from. Today, I proudly wear those badges of honor that helped shape me — like growing up in a small town, working on pig farms, listening to heavy metal music and living on a wrestling mat.
Those who know me realize I am most comfortable in a flannel shirt, a pair of worn blue jeans and some slippers. I drive a pickup truck, and my dog frequently travels with me. I may not fit in well at the country club or on a 100-foot yacht, but that’s OK. I am proud of who I am. Because, most of all… I am a person!
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Music man: Johnston’s Brian Brandsgard is a decades-long vinyl enthusiast

By Darren Tromblay

Music has been a part of Brian Brandsgard’s life for as long as he can remember.
Growing up, Brandsgard and his brother, Jon, would make it a nightly routine to listen to Beaker Street Radio out of Little Rock, Arkansas, before they’d go to bed. Every night, without fail.
“We used to buy vinyl all the time, too,” he says. “There was a store in Humboldt, Iowa, that was a sewing machine place, and we’d go down there every week to see if another Beatles 45 had come in.”
Decades later, that passion has turned into a legitimate business — Bog’s Vinyl — a “store” Brandsgard operates out of his home and at record shows around the state.
